Five ranunculus, five hydrangeas and ten stock in pink and lavender. Ranunculus has a short season — late winter into spring — and when it is out, no florist in the city has it. That makes this a bouquet worth taking when it appears. The stems are hollow and delicate, so keep the vase somewhere it will not be knocked.

Who this one suits

For a promotion, a new home or a graduation it is upright and cheerful, and it survives being carried across an office or handed over at a ceremony.

For someone unwell, keep it out of a shared ward if the flowers are scented, and ask us for a box arrangement instead of a wrap so ward staff are not hunting for a vase.

10 stems suits a standard cylinder vase. Trim a little off the stems every couple of days as you change the water and it will hold its shape longer.

Caring for hydrangeas

Hydrangeas drink through their petals as well as their stems, so a light mist of water on the heads keeps them firm. If a head wilts, submerge the whole flower in cool water for twenty minutes and it usually comes back. Re-cut the thick stems at a steep angle so they can take up water. Five to seven days indoors.

Caring for stock flowers

Stocks are heavily scented and they drink hard. Change the water every day or two — more often than you would for roses — and re-cut the stems each time. Seven to ten days. Because of the scent they are lovely in a hall or a living room, and a poor choice for a hospital room where other patients share the air.
