Fifteen red roses with ten white stock, ten pink spray roses and eucalyptus. The stock brings the scent that red roses on their own lack, and the white against the red keeps it from reading as heavy. It is the mixed alternative to a plain dozen — the same message, more to look at across the week as the different flowers open at different rates.

Who this one suits

An anniversary is the one occasion where size is read as intent, so this sits in the range that lands as considered rather than casual.

As a romantic gift it says what it needs to without a card having to explain it.

15 stems suits a standard cylinder vase. Trim a little off the stems every couple of days as you change the water and it will hold its shape longer.

Caring for spray roses

Each spray rose stem carries several small heads that open in sequence, so the bouquet keeps changing for a week or more. Pinch off any bloom that finishes before the others — it keeps the rest looking fresh and stops the water clouding. Re-cut the stems on arrival and change the water every other day.

Caring for stock flowers

Stocks are heavily scented and they drink hard. Change the water every day or two — more often than you would for roses — and re-cut the stems each time. Seven to ten days. Because of the scent they are lovely in a hall or a living room, and a poor choice for a hospital room where other patients share the air.

Blush and ivory spray roses. Each stem carries several heads, so the bouquet is denser than the stem count suggests and it keeps opening for a week or more. The palette is almost neutral, which makes it one of the few bouquets that works at a wedding, an anniversary and a sympathy delivery without looking wrong at any of them.

Light pink roses in an aqua box. Pale pink is the colour that suits the widest range of occasions — it is soft enough for sympathy and a new baby, warm enough for a birthday, and it does not commit to romance the way red does. If you are sending to someone whose taste you do not know, this is the safest bouquet in the catalogue.

48 stems fills a medium cylinder vase comfortably. If you are sending it somewhere that may not own one, add a vase to the cart and we arrange the flowers in it before it goes out.

Caring for roses

Re-cut the stems at an angle before putting them in water and strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline — submerged leaves are what turns water cloudy and shortens the life of a bouquet. Change the water every other day and keep the vase out of direct sun and away from a heating vent. Ours hold seven to ten days that way.

Red roses, nothing else. Red roses are the one bouquet that needs no card to explain it, which is exactly why the quality of the individual flower matters more here than anywhere: a deep, even red with no brown at the outer petals. Ordered before the cutoff, these are cut, conditioned and tied the same morning they go out.

At 100 stems this needs a wide, heavy vase rather than a tall narrow one — a slim vase will not hold the spread, and the weight of the heads will tip it.

Fifteen hydrangea stems in light pink, blue and white. Three colours of the same flower rather than three different flowers — the shape stays clean and the colour does the work. Hydrangea drinks through its petals as well as its stems, so mist the heads and it will hold five to seven days; a wilted head usually recovers after twenty minutes submerged in cool water.

Who this one suits

For a birthday it reads as celebratory rather than romantic, which makes it safe for a friend, a parent or a colleague as much as a partner.

For a promotion, a new home or a graduation it is upright and cheerful, and it survives being carried across an office or handed over at a ceremony.

15 stems suits a standard cylinder vase. Trim a little off the stems every couple of days as you change the water and it will hold its shape longer.

Caring for hydrangeas

Hydrangeas drink through their petals as well as their stems, so a light mist of water on the heads keeps them firm. If a head wilts, submerge the whole flower in cool water for twenty minutes and it usually comes back. Re-cut the thick stems at a steep angle so they can take up water. Five to seven days indoors.

Thirty-six stems of rose in pink and soft peach, built around Pink Expression. At thirty-six stems this needs to be seen from across a room rather than up close — it is a bouquet with presence, and it wants a wide vase and a surface that can take it. The two tones sit close together, so it reads as one rich colour rather than a mix.

Powder blue hydrangea with lisianthus in lime and blush. Lisianthus looks like a small rose and lasts about as long, but the stems are slender — use a vase that holds them upright rather than a wide one where they splay. The green in this bouquet is a flower colour, not foliage, which is what gives it the fresh, just-cut look.

Ten pink peonies with ten stems of blue tweedia. Tweedia is one of the few genuinely blue flowers that is not dyed, and it is used here in small quantity precisely so it does not compete with the peonies. Both are seasonal and neither is available year-round — when peonies are out of season, no florist in Los Angeles has them at any price.

Caring for peonies

Peonies arrive as tight buds and open over two to three days — that is the point of them, the bouquet changes shape while it sits on the table. If they are slow to open, a warmer room speeds it up; a cooler one slows it down and buys you a few more days. Five to seven days in total.

Caring for tweedia

Tweedia is one of the few genuinely blue flowers, and it is delicate. Keep it cool, change the water every other day, and expect about a week.

Blush peonies with spray roses and garden roses in ivory, pink and coral. Peonies arrive as tight buds and open over two or three days, so this bouquet changes shape more than any other we make — it is smaller on arrival and at its fullest mid-week. If you want it open on the day, tell us and we condition it warmer before it goes.

20 stems suits a standard cylinder vase. Trim a little off the stems every couple of days as you change the water and it will hold its shape longer.

Caring for garden roses

Garden roses carry many more petals than a standard rose and open into a full cup over two to three days. That is when they look their best. Re-cut the stems at an angle before they go in water, strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline, and change the water every other day. Expect five to seven good days — a little shorter than standard roses, in exchange for a fuller flower.

Eight garden roses with thirty spray roses in blush and soft pink. Thirty-eight stems, but most of them small — the effect is a dense, textured mass rather than a row of large heads. This is the shape people photograph. It wants a wide vase; a narrow one pinches the stems together and the whole thing loses its spread.
