About this bouquet

Five sky-blue hydrangeas against ten soft pink spray roses. Blue and pink is a harder pairing than it sounds — the blue has to be cool enough not to turn muddy next to the warm pink, which is why we build this one with hydrangea rather than a dyed flower. The roses open over the week while the hydrangea holds its shape, so the bouquet gets softer as it goes.

For a birthday it reads as celebratory rather than romantic, which makes it safe for a friend, a parent or a colleague as much as a partner.

10 stems suits a standard cylinder vase. Trim a little off the stems every couple of days as you change the water and it will hold its shape longer.

Caring for spray roses

Each spray rose stem carries several small heads that open in sequence, so the bouquet keeps changing for a week or more. Pinch off any bloom that finishes before the others — it keeps the rest looking fresh and stops the water clouding. Re-cut the stems on arrival and change the water every other day.

Caring for hydrangeas

Hydrangeas drink through their petals as well as their stems, so a light mist of water on the heads keeps them firm. If a head wilts, submerge the whole flower in cool water for twenty minutes and it usually comes back. Re-cut the thick stems at a steep angle so they can take up water. Five to seven days indoors.
