Fifteen red roses with ten white stock, ten pink spray roses and eucalyptus. The stock brings the scent that red roses on their own lack, and the white against the red keeps it from reading as heavy. It is the mixed alternative to a plain dozen — the same message, more to look at across the week as the different flowers open at different rates.

15 stems suits a standard cylinder vase. Trim a little off the stems every couple of days as you change the water and it will hold its shape longer.

Caring for spray roses

Each spray rose stem carries several small heads that open in sequence, so the bouquet keeps changing for a week or more. Pinch off any bloom that finishes before the others — it keeps the rest looking fresh and stops the water clouding. Re-cut the stems on arrival and change the water every other day.

Caring for stock flowers

Stocks are heavily scented and they drink hard. Change the water every day or two — more often than you would for roses — and re-cut the stems each time. Seven to ten days. Because of the scent they are lovely in a hall or a living room, and a poor choice for a hospital room where other patients share the air.
